Our Approach
What is it?
The Vermont Manure Share Program is a program managed by UVM Extension to connect and assist farmers and landowners in redistributing manure nutrients from areas of excess to areas of need to avoid negative water quality implications. The program manages a database of users who are looking for or offering manure and, through an application process, provides cost-share to assist in the transfer and safe application of the manure.
Our Story
How does it work?
The program works through a three-step process:
1. The sender/receiver requests to be added to the Vermont Manure Share Program Database by filling out the Vermont Manure Share Database Inquiry form.
2. Once a potential match is found, a Manure Transfer Plan is submitted which includes submitting the following documents:
- a. A Manure Transfer Agreement Form signed by the sender, receiver, and approved hauler (see Approved Manure Hauler List). If a hauler other than one designated on the approved hauler list is used, the hauler must follow the instructions to be added to the list.
- b. Both the sender and receiver must submit a current Nutrient Management Plan or equivalent records as designated in the Required Agricultural Practices (RAPs) for participating fields.
- c. A manure sample analyzed within the last 3 months for the source being transferred. If the transfer will occur outside of the 3-month period, a new sample will need to be taken prior to the transfer.
- d. Receiving Field Inventory including available phosphorus levels from soil tests performed within the last 3 years.
The documents will be reviewed and approved by UVM Extension staff at which point the transfer can occur.
3. Following the transfer, the following documentation needs to be submitted and approved to process the cost-share payment:
- a. Manure hauler submits Transport and Application Records.
- b. Cost-Share Claim are submitted by the party that will receive the payment.
Upon review and approval from UVM Extension staff the cost-share payment will be processed.
